| BURSTING STRENGTH TESTER |
OVERVIEW: Bursting strength is a
widely used measure of resistance to rupture in various
materials. A test specimen is held between two circular clamps
and subjected to an increasing pressure from a rubber
diaphragm. The rubber diaphragm is expanded by a controlled
hydraulic pressure until the test specimen ruptures. The
bursting strength of the specimen is the pressure reading at
the time of rupture.
SIGNIFICANCE : (Why this test
?) The bursting strength test of paper,
paperboard, including linerboard and corrugated board, is a
composite measure of certain properties of the sheet
structure, principally tensile strength and elongation. In
general, bursting strength is dependent on the type,
proportion, preparation and amount of fibers present in the
sheet and their formation, internal sizing, and to some
degree, the surface treatment. While bursting strength is an
empirical property, this test, in combination with basis
weight, serves to define "standard grades" in commerce.
|
Definition : The maximum uniformly
distributed pressure, applied at right angle to its surface
that a test piece will stand under standardized conditions.
|
Measuring Unit : Kg/cm2 , Lbs/in2
and KPa. |
Bursting Factor (B.F) of Paper = (B.S. x
1000)/GSM * where B.S. is Bursting Strength in
Kg/cm2,GSM is the substance of Paper in grams per square
meter. |
PRINCIPLE This test measures the
resistance of a test material to a constant increasing
pressure. The Bursting Strength equipment specifications are
different for different materials and are the most important
specification at the time of procurement and
manufacture. |
Recommended for : Paper,
Paperboard, Corrugated board, Nonwovens, Textiles,
Geotextiles, Film, Tissue, Tobacco Leaf etc. |
DESCRIPTION Bursting Strength
Tester consists of a clamping mechanism (two annular plane
surfaces) to hold the sample against the diaphragm, a mounting
and holding head for the diaphragm, a constant pressure
pumping hydraulic cylinder and a electric motor for generating
and releasing the pressure. The clamping surface has fine
concentric tool marks to minimize slippage, specifications for
which are different for different materials in standards. The
Pumping rate is also variable for different materials hence
the testers are accordingly made for paper OR board OR
corrugated board as per various below mentioned
standards. |

| VERTEX BOX COMPRESSION TESTER - BCT |
DESCRIPTION Corrugated and solid fibre board boxes are subject to compressive forces when stacked and during transportation. It is vital to determine the Compression Strength of the Box in order to make sure that the box will be able to resist the anticipated compressive forces and to determine the load that the box will be able to with stand during transit and storage. This equipment is designed to measure ability of the container resist external compression loads during transit and storage. Compression Strength Test also serves as a useful index of over all quality of the material and workmanship of the box.
The standard capacity of box compression strength tester comes with capacity of 1000kgf. Box compression strength tester having higher capacity to accommodate bigger sizes of box also available.

| Cobb Sizing Test for Liquid
Absorption |
OVERVIEW: The test is used for
determining liquid absorptiveness or resilience of treated and
untreated papers, boards, fabrics and other sheet materials.
The test consists of a test apparatus, its 10-kg roller and
blotting paper. The roller method is recommended to insure
better consistency and reliability that can be obtained by
manual blotting or rubbing the specimen. |
SIGNIFICANCE : (Why this test
?) Water absorptiveness of paper board or other
materials is a function of various characteristics such as
sizing, porosity, etc. The Cobb sizing test can be used to
test absorption or resistance to absorption of water, oil and
other liquids. On Corrugation : The absorption capacity of
corrugating medium has to be controlled in order that it has
the proper receptivity to the corrugating adhesive, which is
an aqueous suspension of starch, for proper adhesion in the
corrugating process. Also a lower Cobb represents superior
resistance to humidity changes and hence takes higher time to
change to atmospheric moisture. | |
| PRINCIPLE This procedure
determines the quantity of water absorbed by a sample of paper
or other sheet material in a specified time and under
standardized conditions. Other liquids such as ink, beverages,
oil and water based solutions may be used instead of water.
The standard area is one hundred square centimeters (cm2),
into which 100cc of liquid are poured to reach a specific
height of 1 cm. |
DESCRIPTION Cobb Sizing Tester
consists of a hollow metal cylinder or ring (100, 25 or 10 cm2
inside area); a rubberized base plate with a clamping device
to hold the ring against the sample. A pressure adjusting
handle is located on the clamping device to seal off the
cylinder when testing uneven materials where an unjacketed
seal is difficult to maintain. A critical component of this
test is a solid stainless steel roller having a smooth face
20cm wide and weighing 10.0+ 0.5kg. Also required for the test
is a 100ml graduated cylinder, a balance with sensitivity of
0.01g or better, blotting paper and a timer / stopwatch.
